IGEL Technology’s Latest Linux Firmware with Extended Dictation and Speech Processing Capabilities

Kuhlmann and Grundig Business Systems Dictation Solutions Allow Customers with Server-Based Computing in the Healthcare and Public Sector to Benefit from Enhanced Ease of Use and End User Productivity.

International - September 3, 2008 – In the future IGEL Technology will integrate drivers for digital dictation and speech processing solutions as standard into its Linux-based thin clients. These features are included in the latest IGEL Linux firmware upgrade and are available to all new IGEL customers and those existing customers using compatible IGEL hardware. This solution, the first of its kind on a Linux-based thin client, will offer substantial advantages to the healthcare and public sectors because it allows digitally captured recordings and text to be attached directly to patient and client files, where additional information can be added and stored.

The latest Linux firmware includes speech processing solutions MBS-easy by Kuhlmann-Informations-Systeme and DigtaSoft Pro by Grundig Business Systems. It supports all dictation functionalities from Philips SpeechMike, and the Digta range of stationary and mobile digital dictation devices from Grundig Business Systems. The use of devices equipped with IGEL’s Linux firmware enables doctors to record the reports they have dictated conveniently and efficiently without the need for additional configuration effort. The reports are saved as audio files directly on the server via IGEL thin clients. From there, they can then be processed efficiently using both speech processing solutions. Both solutions can be used in combination with applications being delivered to the desktop using the Citrix ICA protocol.

“IGEL customers can now benefit from the advantages of server-based computing in combination with professional dictation and speech processing technology”, notes Marco Raffel, Key Account Healthcare team leader at IGEL Technology. “This will enable doctors, for example, to dictate their reports as audio files and record them on the server via an IGEL thin client which reduces the time spent on administrative activities, leaving the doctors more time to focus on patient care. Immediately after their rounds, doctors can record their findings via the IGEL Universal Desktop and assign them to the appropriate patient files.”
Industry experts estimate that digital dictation and speech processing systems are capable of achieving time savings in medical reporting of up to 50 percent, particularly in large hospitals. The faster availability of medical information can improve treatment results and help reduce medical errors, as it provides better decision support to healthcare professionals.
