Question
When and in which situations do I get support directly from IGEL Technology?

Answer
If you are currently testing an IGEL thin client, you can contact IGEL Support directly. Otherwise, you should first contact your reseller or distributor as they are responsible for first and second level support.

IMPORTANT
If you have bought a used or modified IGEL thin client (outside the warranty period) at an Internet auction or similar, IGEL Technology cannot guarantee first and second level support. In such cases you should contact the seller of the device directly. For warranty reasons IGEL Technology does not provide instructions or support for the technical handling of your products above and beyond the defined product characteristics.

(b) Troubleshooting

[1]
Question
When I restart my thin client, it loses its setup configuration. What could be the reason?

Answer
You should first remove the configured thin client from your network and then start it without a network connection. If the thin client has kept all settings, check the following:
Are you using PXE or BootP services? If so, the thin client fetches the relevant configuration by default and therefore overwrites the local settings of your thin client. To prevent this, go into the BIOS (press "DEL" when the  thin client starts to boot) and disable "Onboard LAN Boot ROM" at "Integrated Peripherals".
Another reason may be that you are using IGEL Remote Management Suite, respectively the incorrect assignment of profiles. Please check this in your IGEL Remote Management Suite.
In the IGEL Setup you can prevent the thin client from fetching a setup from a server. You disable the function in IGEL Setup → System → File Transfer “Setup of Server”.

Another reason could be the use of a  RIS (Remote Installation Server) in your network. The RIS server has its own TFTP protocol. This is transferred via DHCP and it may be that the IGEL  thin client takes the settings from the RIS server. To prevent this problem, disable "Server Setup" at IGEL Setup → System → Network →  Further Network Settings →  File Transfer.

Question
My thin client does not start correctly. What should I do?

Answer
First reset your client to factory defaults. Click on the following link for instructions:
Factory default (document internal hyperlink to factory default doc)

In Addition, you should also load the optimized defaults in the BIOS. If this doesn't help, check all attached cables and connectors and swap them with a functioning device.

Linux only
When the client boots, press <ALT+F10> to enter the text-based boot process and view processing of the individual modules and drivers. Write down where the client stops and, if necessary, give this information to your Support contact.

Windows® XP Embedded only
Like Windows® XP Professional, Windows® XP Embedded also lets you access the "last known good configuration" by pressing the F8 key when you boot the client. You should try this in the event of an error. The "Safe Mode" function in the same menu cannot be used with Windows® XP Embedded.

If this does not help, try to load a recent snapshot onto the device to restore the original situation. You can find detailed information on the snapshot mechanism of Windows® XP Embedded in the XP Embedded snapshots section (document-internal hyperlink to XP Embedded snapshot mechanism).

[3]
Question
My  thin client stops during the boot process. Can I check at which point the client has stopped?

Answer
Press <ALT>+<F10> to switch to the text-based boot process in order to check exactly where the client freezes (Linux only).

Question
When I scroll in a document (i.e.Excel), the screen carries on scrolling. What can I do to prevent this?

Answer
If this happens in a RDP session, proceed as follows (Linux only):

In Setup at Sessions → RDP (Global RDP Settings)

Window → disable / enable Backing Store
Performance → enable all checkboxes
Options → disable / enable compression
Options → Update Interval = 400

Go to  Setup → System → Registry to activate the setting rdp → winconnect → minimize-memory.

If this happens in an ICA session, activate the ICA optimization settings as described under the following link:

ICA optimization (document internal hyperlink to "session optimization")

Question
I cannot start Remote Management Suite or I receive an error message. What can I do?

Answer
It often helps to restart the system. Check, whether there are any helpful entries in your server's event log.
IGEL Remote Management Suite needs a number of ports for communication purposes. You should therefore check whether the ports are blocked. Some of the ports can be changed using Remote Management Suite Administrator.

Note
If Remote Management Suite is installed on a Windows® system (e.g. Windows® XP Professional, Service Pack 2), the Windows-internal firewall often gives rise to errors. In the event of an error, stop the firewall service temporarily in the service administration of your server and check that no other firewall is blocking communication (e.g. Zone Alarm, Sygate Firewall, Outpost, etc).

IGEL Remote Management Suite needs a number of services in addition to the ports. If an error occurs, check that all relevant services have been started.

If the above suggestions do not help, provide your support contact with Remote Management Suite log files and all relevant information on your operating system, Service Packs and other server add-ons.

Question
How do I open a local shell on a Linux system?

Answer
If you need a local shell, you need to create one. Do this in "Application Launcher". In the "Config" group box, click on "Add" to create an application named "Local Shell/Application" and then start it from your desktop.

[2]
Question
How can I change the desktop wallpaper (background image)?

Answer
The new icon or wallpaper has to be available in "xpm" format and can be located in the "wfs" directory. However, it is better to make the wallpaper available by means of a mount (SMB or NFS) because space in "wfs" is very limited (max. 25-30kb). This method also enables the mounted file to be managed centrally (server side) so that it is not necessary to configure the terminal locally each time.

An "rc.custom.7" file must also be created in the "wfs" directory; this is used to copy the icon or wallpaper from the "wfs" directory or mount into the appropriate directory. The path to which it must be copied is /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/pixmaps. The filenames must match the names of the files to be copied (background image, e.g. wallpaper.xpm).

Example: "cp wallpaper.xpm /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/pixmaps"

Once you have done this, you must permanently write the changes to flash memory using the "cffswrite" command. Otherwise, they will disappear when you next boot.

Question
How can I install additional CA root certificates for the ICA Client or browser on the system?

Answer
Proceed as follows for the ICA Client:

1. Open a local shell on the terminal. Click on the following link to find out how to create or start a local shell:
Local shell (document internal hyperlink to Linux: local shell doc)
2. Enter the "su" command in the shell to obtain administrator rights. If an administrator password is set, enter it now.

3. Then invoke the following commands:
mkdir /wfs/icacerts
cd /wfs/icacerts
4. Now use FTP to place the root CA certificate in the directory "/wfs/icacerts". You must, of course, have already made the certificate available on an FTP server. The certificate must have the file extension ".crt".
The commands needed to use FTP are as follows:
ftp server-name (or IP address)

ftp> cd certificate-directory
ftp> bin    (→ switch to binary mode)
ftp> get certificate.crt
ftp> bye
5. Now run the "cffswrite" command to store the certificate permanently on the terminal.

6. Use the "ls -al /wfs/icacerts" command to check whether the certificate has the right file size and has been stored correctly.
The certificate is available to the ICA Client the next time you boot.
Proceed as follows for the Firefox browser:

1. Open a browser session using "Application Launcher".

2. Open the Registry in Setup for the terminal and set the parameter
+ sessions
   + browser0
      + app
         - store_certkey

02-03-01

02-03-02

Close the setup menu so that the changes take effect.

3. Open a local shell, log in as administrator with "su" and copy the certificate into the /userhome directory:

cp /wfs/icacerts/certificate.crt /userhome

(For security reasons, the /wfs/icacerts directory cannot be accessed using the browser. The certificate must be copied into a different directory so that it can be imported in the browser.)

4. Start the browser and open "Settings" in the "Edit" menu. In the "Settings" window click on "Advanced" in the left part of the screen then on Certificates in the right part of the screen.

02-03-03

5. Click on the "Manage certificates" button in the right part of the screen. This opens the Certificate Manager.

6. Switch to the "Authority" tab and import the certificate. To do this, simply "open" the certificate that is located in the "/userhome" directory.

02-03-04

02-03-05

To store the certificate in the browser, all you need do after importing the certificate is to close all browser Windows®.

Question
What is a "buddy update" and what do I need to know to set it up?

Answer
The purpose of a buddy update is to save bandwidth if, for example, an external site or company branch office has only a low-capacity data link (ISDN, for instance). In this case, it is not advisable to use the data link to send firmware updates to each client via FTP. Instead, it is better to designate a "buddy" in the branch office. The firmware update is sent only to this buddy via the data link using FTP. The buddy then assumes the role of an update server for the other clients in the branch office. You must first enable the selected buddy client as an update server in Setup at System → Buddy Update.
Then, at Setup → Update, enter the buddy data on the clients that should receive their firmware from the designated buddy.

Question
What can I do if there is insufficient installation space on the RAM disk?

Answer:
The temporary directories of the Windows® system all point to the RAM disk which has very limited space. If an application wants to unpack itself into the temporary directories during installation and would therefore overfill the RAM disk, you must modify the Windows® environment variables before you start installation. Do this at Control Panel → System → Advanced → Environment Variables. Here you can change the drive letter for the "TEMP" and "TMP" directories from "Z" to, for example, "C".

[3]
Question
How do I perform a firmware update? What do I need to know?

Answer
  1. First of all you need a local FTP server. There you unpack the firmware update into a directory or into the root directory. (Note that the 'anonymous' user has a password and that it is a simple matter to access the firmware of a different client!)
  2. Make sure that the  thin client has access to the FTP server.
  3. Basically, you have two ways of communicating the update settings to the  thin client. Either via IGEL Remote Management Suite or locally at the device. You will find the settings under “Update”. First enter either the IP address or the DNS name of the update server. Here, you also need to specify the path to the update. If the update is located in the root directory of the FTP server, leave the field empty or specify the appropriate directory.
Then enter the user name and the user password. If you are an 'anonymous' user, you must enter a password. Otherwise you cannot perform the update.
  4. Once you have made these settings, start the update directly on the client by clicking on the Update button. Using Remote Management Suite you can, for example, instruct the  thin client to run an update, or highlight the relevant  thin client, open the  thin client menu with the right mouse button (alternatively you can use the menu bar) and select Update. The  thin client then runs a firmware update.

Question
I get the message "Cannot connect to Remote Management Server" when I try to add  thin clients after the successful installation of Remote Management Suite. What could be the reason?

Answer
This error message indicates that the clients cannot communicate correctly with Remote Management Suite. The most common reason is that  Remote Management Suite has been installed on a system with an integrated firewall (e.g. Windows® XP with Service Pack 2). You are advised to disable the Windows® firewall service. Alternatively, you can enable the required ports in the firewall. For a list of the ports used click here: Ports

[5]
Question
I get the message "Error: Certificate Invalid" when I try to add  thin clients after successfully installing Remote Management Suite. What could be the reason?

Answer
Communication between  Remote Management Suite and the  thin clients is protected by a certificate. This security solution ensures that  thin clients can be administered by one Remote Management Suite only. The reason for the error message is that the client to be added was previously associated with a different IGEL Remote Management Suite and has already been given a security certificate. The existing certificate must be manually removed from the client before the client can be correctly added to a different Remote Management Suite. This can be done either directly on the device or by means of VNC shadowing (if enabled).

Question
What do I particularly need to consider when reinstalling Remote Management Suite?

Answer
It is important to use the uninstall routine shipped with  Remote Management Suite for uninstall purposes. Once uninstall is complete you should manually reboot the system. You should also check whether the installation directory (generally c:\program files\igel) has been removed and whether there are still files of the "vpd.properties" type on the system. If one or both are present, you should delete them.

Please note
New versions of  Remote Management Suite are always full-installation versions. It is therefore mandatory to remove the previous version before installing the new version. Updating or installing on top of the existing version is not recommended.

Installation of  Remote Management Suite on a VMware-based system is not supported!
Top ▲
[10]
Question
Is it possible to update an existing version of Remote Management Suite without risk?

Answer
Because old and new versions of  Remote Management Suite are sometimes very different in technical terms, you are advised not to perform updates. It is better to create a backup of the database and then use the uninstall routine to remove the previous installation. You can then install a new version.

Tip!
If you want to migrate to a new version of Remote Management Suite, you should download the new version from www.download-igel.com. These versions are usually more recent than those on the IGEL product CD, for example.

[11]
Question
I cannot start Remote Management Suite or receive an error message. What can I do?

Answer
You should first simply reboot your system. This is often sufficient to solve minor problems.
If this does not help, report the exact wording of the error message you received to support@igel.com. A screenshot of the message would also be helpful. Similarly, a glance at the event log of the server might help. IGEL Support also needs the Catalina log files of Remote Management Suite (generally located at c:\program files\igel\remotemanager\rmguiserver\logs).

Please note
Refer to Remote Management Suite Installation Guide to check whether you use a released server operating system for installation purposes.

Question
Are the profiles created dependent on model, or can the profiles be assigned to several different product classes?

Created profiles are not generally model-dependent. However, you should ensure that the profiles are optimized for the device and the firmware with which they are to be used. Otherwise the device will probably work with the profiles but there is no guarantee that, for example, all new features of the device firmware are fully supported.

Please note
Created profiles should not be used on different operating systems.

Usually a database backup is only necessary if a large number of changes have been made (creation of new profiles, addition of new clients, etc.). If an established Remote Management Suite environment remains unchanged over a longer period of time, it does not make sense to regularly back up the database.

[4]
Question
Is everything saved when the database is backed up?

Answer
The database backup includes all components needed for operation ( thin clients, profiles, scheduled tasks, certificates). It is not necessary to back up the individual components manually.

Question
What should I do if the database statistics screens indicate that the data or log volumes are nearly full?

Answer
In this case, you should create an additional data or log volume to ensure that Remote Management Suite continues to function correctly.

Question
Can I use touchscreens with  thin clients?

Answer
You can use the touch screens of the following manufacturers on Linux-based IGEL  thin clients:
- Elographics
- MicroTouch
- 3M Dynapro
- Fujitsu
Please note that only serially-connected touch screens can be operated on Linux-based  thin clients. Touchscreens cannot be connected via USB.

You can use any touch screens on IGEL  thin clients based on Windows® XP Embedded because you are able to install your own drivers. Touchscreens can be connected via USB in this case.

You cannot use touch screens on Windows® CE IGEL thin clients.

Question
Can I use PDAs / handhelds on  thin clients or in Citrix sessions?

Answer
  1. Linux
Citrix Server and the PDA must satisfy a number of requirements. The basic Citrix requirements are documented by Citrix at Citrix. No settings are needed on the thin client.
  2. Windows® XP Embedded
Again, there are a number of basic Citrix requirements that must be satisfied (Citrix Server version, PDA operating system). You can install any needed components yourself because in comparison to Linux, Windows® XP Embedded is an open operating system.
  3. Windows® CE
PDAs cannot be used on Windows® CE IGEL thin clients.

When I print from the Firefox browser, I get only strings of strange characters on the printer. What could be the reason?

    Answer
This probably happens because you are not using a PostScript capable printer. To print from the Firefox browser, the printer must support the "Postscript 2" printer language.

    Question
How can I find out which additional hardware can be operated on the clients?

    Answer
For hardware supported please contact IGEL Support at support@igel.com.

    Please note:
You should test any hardware not included in this list before you use it because IGEL is not able to test and certify the entire range of hardware available on the market. The products of third-party hardware vendors often change rapidly so that one and the same product may use different internal chipsets.

    Question
How do I configure USB devices (e.g. USB stick, USB card reader) with thin clients (Linux)?

    Answer
You configure these devices in the IGEL Setup at "Devices" → "USB Storage Hotplug". When you do so, it is important to specify the number of connected devices. A card reader, for example, is just one physical device but it has several card slots. You must therefore specify the number of slots as the number of devices. Most USB devices should function but, due to chipset incompatibilities, it often happens that USB devices are not fully supported or are not supported at all by the Linux system. Devices should therefore always be tested in advance in a test setup.

    Question
How do I configure printers on Linux-based  thin clients?

    Answer
This tab is the central tool for configuring the properties of your LPD or ThinPrint printer.

    07-12-01

    • You can add a network printer here. Enter the server name or the IP address of the printer or the name of its print queue (further information on printer settings is provided on the next page).
    • Modify…
    • Click here to change the settings of the preconfigured printer or of the printer just added (see next page).
    • Set default
In the "List of LPD Printers" select the printer you want to use as the default printer and click on "set default". The selected printer is automatically assigned to queue "lp" in /etc/printcab. You can use "lp" for printing to your default printer.
Note: In Linux you must typically make these changes manually in "file /etc/printcab".

This is not necessary on your thin client. You can make all changes in the Setup screens described here. The changes are then transferred to /etc/printcab in near real-time.

Do not make any manual changes to the /etc/printcab file! If you do, they will be overwritten by further changes during Setup or will be lost when your  thin client is rebooted.

      Smartcards & Security

    [1]
    Question
What should I check if I receive an error message when writing to the Smartcard?

    Answer
You should first check whether you have inserted the Smartcard the right way round in the  thin client. Don't forget that Smartcards of the Compact and Premium (Winestra) Series must be inserted differently. With the Premium Series the IGEL logo on the card must be on the left (as seen from the front of the device). The card is then "the right way round" in the device. With the Compact Series, the opposite applies. The IGEL logo must be on the right (as seen from the front of the device).

Cherry G80-1501 and G80-1502 keyboards with integrated health card reader must be operated in mode 1 (switch on the rear of the keyboard).

    Functionality
A card reader application can be started locally using the start menu, desktop, context menu or Application Launcher and from a remote computer using RSH. The application reads the data from the inserted card and saves it to a file.

The application terminates without user intervention if the data is read successfully. The repeat/cancel buttons are shown if the read operation fails (no card inserted, etc.). You receive a message indicating that the read operation was successful or failed.

The data on the card is saved to a file. You can configure the directory in which the file is created. You either specify a fixed filename or generate a name using the .dat scheme.

The following four data formats are available.

    Format 0
Each line begins with a two-digit tag that matches the tag for the data structure of the insured person's data according to the Kassenärztliche Bundesvereinigung (German association of statutory health insurance physicians). The data of the tag then follows, separated by a blank. The line terminates with CR LF. Optional tags not included on the card are not listed in the file. The PrüfSumme (checksum) tag is not listed. The day, month and year are each separated by "." on the GeburtsDatum (date of birth) and GültigkeitsDatum (validity date) tags.

    Format 1
Each line begins with the content name of the tag. The data of the tag then follows, separated by an equals sign. The line terminates with CR LF. All tags are listed, with an empty data string where appropriate. The data is converted from the internal card DIN 66003 format to ISO 8859-1 format.

    Format 2
Each line begins with a two-digit tag that matches the tag for the data structure of the insured person's data according to the Kassenärztliche Bundesvereinigung (German association of statutory health insurance physicians). The data of the tag then follows, separated by a blank. The line terminates with CR LF. Optional tags not included on the card are not listed in the file. The PrüfSumme (checksum) tag is not listed. The day, month and year are each separated by "." on the GeburtsDatum (date of birth) and GültigkeitsDatum (validity date) tags. The data is converted from the internal card DIN 66003 format to ISO 8859-1 format.

    Format 3
Each line begins with a two-digit tag that matches the tag for the data structure of the insured person's data according to the Kassenärztliche Bundesvereinigung (German association of statutory health insurance physicians). The data of the tag then follows, separated by a blank. The line terminates with CR LF. Optional tags not included on the card are not listed in the file. The PrüfSumme (checksum) tag is not listed. The data is converted from the internal card DIN 66003 format to ISO 8859-1 format.

    The tags are as follows:

    Tag Length Optional Contents
80 2-28 no KrankenKassenName (name of health insurance company)
81 7 no KrankenKassenNummer (number of health insurance company)
8f 5 yes VKNR (number of contracting insurance company)

89 2-28 yes StraßenName (street name)
8a 1-3 yes WohnsitzLänderCode (country of residence code)
8b 4-7 no PostLeitzahl (postal code)
8c 2-23 no OrtsName (name of town)
8d 4 yes GültigkeitsDatum (validity date)
    8e 1 no PrüfSumme (checksum)

    Configuration
If you use the Towitoko reader, it is important that the Towitoko Chipdrive Micro entry at Devices → PC/SC in Setup is NOT active.
For other CT-API readers it is essential to activate the PC/SC daemon at Devices → PC/SC in Setup. If you use the Omnikey CardMan 3111 reader, the corresponding entry must be selected in the list.

You can configure a card reader session in the start menu for sessions. Here you specify the card reader type (Cherry or CT-API) that you want to use.

You must indicate the port for CT-API readers:
    - specify the corresponding COM port for serial Towitoko or Omnikey readers
    - select the "Omnikey USB" setting for all USB readers
You must also define the following parameters
    - name and path of the file containing the data read
    - session start options (start menu, desktop, context menu, Application Launcher)

You can also select the format for the generated data and specify the owner of the generated file.

To store the files on a UNIX or Windows® server, you go to Setup and mount a server directory in the directory to which the card data is written (default is /kvkdaten).

You do this at Setup → Network → Further Network Settings → NFS or Setup → Network → Further Network Settings → SMB.

In ICA and RDP sessions you can, as an alternative, use a drive assignment to make the data accessible from a Windows® terminal server.

To start the card reader application from a remote computer using RSH, you must enable access to the application in Setup.

To do this, add an application at

Setup → Security → RSH Remote Access

and enter the application name readcherrykvkcard.

    Question
Icons for "Cisco VPN Connection", "ADSL PPP Connection" or "PPTP Connection", for example, suddenly appear on the desktop of my Linux-based IGEL  thin client although the programs were not configured. Where do the icons come from and how can I remove them?

    Answer
Icons of this kind appear on the desktop or in "Application Launcher" even if you have only viewed the configuration of the respective applications (using the "Add" button). If icons appear on the desktop unexplainably, you should check in Setup at "Network" → "Further Network Settings" → "PPTP" / "ADSL" / "Cisco VPN" whether there are session list entries that lead nowhere. If there are, you should delete them.

    Question
How can I make sure that the alias name for the printer queue is passed correctly on Linux-based  thin clients?

    Answer
You specify the alias name in the printer configuration (Setup → Printer → LPD → "Modify"). You must also set the value "defaultislast" at Setup → System → Registry → Print → LPD.

    Question
Is it possible without risk to fit additional graphic cards to  thin clients that have a PCI slot?

    Answer
Use of additional graphic cards is not supported because all IGEL  thin clients are passively cooled and an external graphic card typically generates considerable excess heat. This would interfere with the cooling concept (heat dissipation via the case) and could result in to errors or total failure.

    Question
How are the IGEL  thin clients set-up to find IGEL Remote Management Suite at start-up so that they can fetch their configuration properly.

    Answer
There are three basic ways of communicating the relevant  Remote Management Suite to the clients:

    1. Using a profile
In this case all clients must first be added in Remote Management Suite. The "enable remote management" option is then set by means of a profile at "System" → "Remote Management Suite". Only the IP address of  Remote Management Suite need be entered here.

    2. Using DHCP
Typically the IP address is assigned to  thin clients via DHCP. For this purpose it is necessary to add range option 224 on the DHCP server and to enter the IP address of  Remote Management Suite as a string field. Further information is available in  Remote Management Suite help.

    3. Using DNS
If you are using DNS, you can set an alias name ("igelrmserver") on the DNS server. This name points to the IP address of IGEL Remote Management Suite. Each time the IGEL  thin clients are started, they query this name and are informed where their Remote Management Suite is located.

    Question
Setup of a dial-up connection fails because the login information is supposedly incorrect. The login information originates directly from the provider and is definitely correct. Why can't I use this information?

    Answer
Some providers (T-Online, for example) require you to enter a user name consisting of various components when you set up a connection. If the name includes a special character (such as #), the Linux system interprets the character as a system-internal command. If you definitely want to use the special character, you must escape it with a backslash (\). This applies for all special characters.
