| IGEL thin client solutions available in the Universal Desktop model series allow direct access to web-based applications from a public, private or hybrid cloud. They feature an integrated web browser – including Java runtime environment and critical plug-ins – which allows simple web services to be implemented as well as cost-efficient IT delivery models such as SaaS. |
A Wide Range of Application Scenarios Typical application scenarios for direct cloud access range from conventional office workstations and information terminals, to emergency situations (disaster recovery) through to linking company branch offices and home-based workstations by means of web portals (e.g. Citrix Secure Access Gateway). To facilitate all this, IGEL Universal Desktop thin clients feature platform-independent management capability by means of the Java-based IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS).
Local Tools and Plug-ins:- Web access: integrated Internet browser (Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer) for fast and easy access to private and public cloud services.
- Java: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) for local operation of Java applications, allowing increased overall performance and reduced load on the central server.
- Microsoft .NET: In addition to Java, all IGEL Universal Desktop solutions running Windows Embedded Standard also support .NET.
- PDF / multimedia: Increased performance and reduced server load are also achieved through a locally available PDF reader and multimedia plug-ins, which are ideal for training courses, advertising and infotainment.

Hervis – An Example of User Success: Added Value from Surf Terminals |

| Hervis Sports, a subsidiary of the SPAR Austria Group – one of Austria’s largest chains of food and non-food stores – provides both its customers and employees with a simple and elegant way to access the Internet. An example of the devices deployed includes the IGEL UD9 thin client, which is compactly integrated within its own monitor. The Internet browser runs in full-screen mode, and user access rights are appropriately restricted. The surf station can be fully managed remotely with the IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS). |
Your advantages: minimal TCO, high security
- Efficient access to SaaS and DaaS (Software/Desktop as a Service)
- Alternative means of accessing IT resources (mainframes, SBC, VDI): These methods decrease the workload on central server resources and also allow setup of emergency fallback systems (such as networks of home-based workstations in case of pandemics or natural catastrophes).
- Info terminals for kiosk operation, such as for time stamping of arrivals and departures, processing of mail orders or conducting searches.
- The embedded operating system limits possible exposure to dangerous attacks over the Internet. In the unlikely event that trojans or viruses from the Internet somehow manage to infect the operating system, they can only remain there until it is restarted.
- Internet-based access from small branch offices and home-based offices by means of DSL (with onboard LAN and PPPoE)
- Greater security for VPN connections: L2TP or third-party VPN – Cisco / NCP.
- Minimal management requirements: easy, profile-based assignment of device settings.
- Green IT: up to 88% lower power consumption, lower energy costs and lower CO2 emissions compared to PC-based environments.
- Future readiness: conforms to Internet standards, ongoing updates of device firmware including the web browser and plug-ins.
