Zero Clients – How “Zero” Are They Really?
| Some thin client manufacturers apply attributes such “Zero OS,” “Zero CPU” or “Zero Management” to certain devices. These models, known collectively as “zero clients,” may have different designs, but they all implicitly or explicitly promise “zero management” effort and expense. However, usually these devices cannot actually live up to this promise, for as a rule they still have CPUs and also come with management tools. Moreover, their designs are proprietary ones, which tie their buyers down to specific application and solution scenarios. This means that compared to a universal, open approach, these so-called “zero clients” actually offer limited functionality, deployability and therefore less future readiness. |
