IGEL Endpoints and Microsoft VDI

microsoft vdi compatible endpoints
Microsoft Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) is a centralized desktop delivery solution. It is a model for seamlessly delivering secure desktops hosted in a data center. Microsoft’s System Center technology allows all centralized desktops and enterprise data to be managed in a standardized manner. Taken together, the dynamic memory in Windows Server (as of Version 2008 R2 SP1), the Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisor and the application virtualization technologies all reduce the amount of hardware required for VDI deployment. IGEL endpoints are Microsoft VDI compatible endpoints.

Components and hypervisors

The full range of features available in the Microsoft VDI Standard Suite and Microsoft VDI Premium Suite includes the scalable and stable high-performance Hyper-V Server 2012 hypervisor, the Microsoft System Center integrated management suite including Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012, as well as technologies for application virtualization (Microsoft App-V) and Remote Desktop Services (RDS) for session virtualization including Microsoft RemoteApp. Dynamic desktop delivery can be accomplished with either Citrix XenDesktop or Microsoft’s own native VDI connection broker.

Microsoft RDP and RemoteFX

Access to Remote Desktop and RemoteApp is handled by the Microsoft RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) standard protocol; the Microsoft RemoteFX protocol extension (as of RDP 7.1) enhances the local user experience. The improved RemoteFX (RDP 8) that comes with Windows Server 2012 is also WAN-compatible and offers better USB and multimedia redirection.

Support from IGEL software and hardware

As a standard feature, all IGEL Universal Desktop solutions, including IGEL’s UDC software, support Microsoft RDP in conjunction with all available operating systems. RemoteFX (RDP 7.1) is supported by all Linux-based models starting with the IGEL UD3, the IGEL UDC software and by all models with Windows Embedded Standard 7 (W7). To provide an alternative or improved method of USB redirection, IGEL has integrated the “USB over Network” software client from FabulaTech into its firmware.
