IGEL Managed Containers: Simplifying Secure Workloads at the Edge

IGEL Managed Containers: Simplifying Secure Workloads at the Edge

At IGEL Now & Next Frankfurt, we introduced IGEL Managed Containers™ and shared our vision for how containerized workloads can transform both IT and OT environments. From industrial protocol translation to AI inference and secure browsing at the edge, organizations are rapidly shifting toward more modular, distributed application models.

At IGEL Now & Next Miami, we’re taking the next step in that journey. Today, we’re announcing a private preview program for IGEL Managed Containers, giving customers the opportunity to run real workloads, validate use cases, and help shape the product as we move toward general availability this year.

This announcement is grounded in a clear goal: enabling organizations to modernize endpoint and edge workloads without introducing new layers of complexity or risk. While containers have become the standard for modern application delivery, extending them into OT and distributed environments has remained challenging. Security expectations are rising, operational tolerance for disruption is low, and many container strategies introduce more tooling than they remove.

IGEL Managed Containers is designed to simplify that equation.

Benefits of IGEL Managed Containers

At a high level, containers allow organizations to package applications into lightweight, portable units that can run consistently anywhere, making it faster and safer to deploy new capabilities without changing the underlying system. For IT and OT teams, this means quicker innovation, simpler updates, and reduced risk to critical operations. Rather than requiring new infrastructure or rethinking existing workflows, IGEL allows organizations to bring their current container investments directly to the endpoint. Customers will be able to connect to their existing OCI-compliant registries and deploy containerized workloads onto IGEL OS. There is no need to rebuild images or adopt unfamiliar tooling. Initial support will focus on Podman-based containers, with additional capabilities evolving over time.

What makes this approach powerful is not just where containers run—but how they are managed.

With IGEL Managed Containers, everything is conveniently governed through the Universal Management Suite (UMS), providing a centralized control plane for distributed environments. IT teams can deploy workloads, manage lifecycle operations such as starting and stopping containers, and enforce consistent policies across endpoints, all from a single interface. This eliminates the need for separate container management stacks at the edge and significantly reduces operational complexity.

At the same time, the underlying IGEL OS provides a secure, read-only foundation. Containers run within this controlled environment, allowing organizations to combine the flexibility of their existing images with the security posture of a hardened endpoint platform. The result is a model where innovation does not come at the cost of stability or control, something that is especially critical in OT use cases.

Reduce friction while maintaining governance.

IGEL Managed Containers also reinforces a clear separation of responsibilities between security and DevOps teams. Security defines what is allowed to run, while DevOps retains the flexibility to build and deliver workloads quickly. By enforcing this boundary at the platform level, organizations can reduce friction while maintaining governance.

Ultimately, the value comes down to one core principle: centralized control without added complexity. Instead of introducing new orchestration layers, IGEL extends containerized workloads to the endpoint and manages them through an existing, trusted secure platform.

Join the Preview Group

As organizations continue to modernize their environments, this balance—between flexibility, security, and simplicity—becomes increasingly important. If you’re interested in being part of this journey, we invite you to join the IGEL Managed Containers preview program. Participants will gain early access, provide feedback, and help shape the roadmap as we move closer to general availability.
